CLIMBING PICO DA VARA, SAO MIGUEL

There is no doubt Sao Miguel Island has something special, placed in the middle of the Atlantic and fullfilled with landscapes you only could imagine from New Zealand or the exotic Pacific Hawaii island. In a certain way we are lucky to have this miracle of the nature so close to the european continent.

I wanna show you today the "Pico Da Vara" trail. Pico Da Vara, accounting 1103m, is the highest point in "Sao Miguel" island and the second highest in the Azors just after "Montanha Do Pico" in Pico Island. We could consider this a medium level hike, not for kids or ancients but affordable for quite less harsh than "Montaha do Pico".

It takes around 2 hours to reach the peak and 1'5 half hours for the downhill. Before leaving it's s must to prepare your sack with 1'5 liter of water per person and some chocolate bars to eat during the way.  Keep in mind as well than certain parts of the trail could be muddy or wetty, try to wear waterproof or mountain boots. To take a mountain stick is always helpful.

The departure point can be find in the next google maps address:

Right there you can leave your car parked in along the path and start the trail climbing the wood stairs just in front of you.

The first step of the trail is an steady climb through dense cedar forests. When the forest ends, you have outstanding views over the the island.

Throughout the way ou'll see two monoliths in memory of two aircraft accidents that took plave on the hill, one of "Air France" in 1949 and anothe one of the Portuguese Air Force in 1943.

Once on the top, if you are lucky and there are no clouds you'll be able to see the whole surface of Sao Miguel island. The views from the top are totally worthed

After descending, you'll need to recover forces, I high recomendation is to drive 40 minutes east to "Assciaciao Agrícola de Sao Miguel" in order to ask for a "Bife da Associacio", perfect plan for a perfect day, believe me.
